HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 c165W
Mr. Brockway

asked the Minister of Health what contribution will be made to the Slough project for a sheltered workshop and hostel for handicapped children.

Mr. Walker-Smith

I understand that the project as a whole consists of a unit for spastic children and an occupational therapy unit both to be provided by the county council, and a workshop and hostel for mentally handicapped young people which is to be built and operated initially by the National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children. I assume that the Question refers to the last part. I understand that my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour is prepared to give financial assistance towards the running costs subject to his approval of the workshop as providing facilities for the employment or training of severely disabled persons. If local health authorities send other young people to the hostel or workshop, they will be expected to pay for their maintenance.
