HC Deb 04 April 1960 vol 621 cc15-6W
97. Mr. Owen

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the diminishing opportunities for employment for disabled persons in the mid- Northumberland area, and the urgent need to attract more and varied industries to this area; what action Her Majesty's Government is taking in this matter; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. P. Thomas

I am aware that the local employment situation has for some time been growing more difficult for the disabled as well as the able-bodied but it has improved appreciably during this last month. The Government would welcome diversifying industry and my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade is bringing the area to the attention of industrialists.
