HC Deb 24 November 1959 vol 614 c28W
83. Mrs. Butler

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what estimate he has made of the number of houses which need to be provided in the next 10 years to rehouse families living in overcrowded, insanitary, or unhealthy conditions in houses which are not scheduled as slum properties.

Mr. H. Brooke

I could not at present give an estimate; at present, slum clearance is the first priority. All the time local authorities are doing a great deal under their housing and public health powers to secure the repair and improvement of defective houses. The number of houses in England and Wales which had defects remedied under these provisions in 1958 was 281,000.
