HC Deb 20 November 1959 vol 613 cc169-70W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that, owing to the East German Government not being recognised by Her Majesty's Government, direct inquiries concerning the whereabouts of members of Her Majesty's forces posted as missing in West Berlin, as in the cases of Corporal Allan Brooks and Lance-Corporal Derek Alderson, are thereby precluded; and what methods are adopted by Her Majesty's Government to ascertain whether these and other absentees were kidnapped by the East German authorities or crossed into East Berlin of their own accord.

Mr. R. Allan

Inquiries concerning the whereabouts of members of Her Majesty's Forces posted as missing in West Berlin an; made to the Soviet Commandant in Berlin or to the Soviet Commander-in-Chief, whom Her Majesty's Government hold responsible. If the known circumstances make it appear that absentees are being held against their will in East Berlin or Fast Germany, the Soviet authorities are requested to grant an interview with them. The result of the latest request, made on 6th November, for an interview with Corporal Brooks and Lance-Corporal Alderson is still awaited.
