HC Deb 17 November 1959 vol 613 cc99-100W
52. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what assistance he gives to local authorities in the London County Council and elsewhere to provide houses and flats when these are required, in addition to those already being provided.

Mr. H. Brooke

The basic housing subsidies available to housing authorities in England and Wales are £22 1s. 0d. per dwelling for slum clearance purposes; £24 for "overspill" building for the relief of congested or overcrowded areas; and £10 for one-bedroom dwellings provided for general needs. These subsidies are payable annually for sixty years. Higher rates of subsidy are available towards the extra cost of building flats in high blocks. In addition, special subsidies are payable for the development of sites which are abnormally expensive.
