asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of crimes of violence known to the police for which corporal punishment could have been imposed prior to the alteration of the law in 1948 which were committed in 1948, 1957, 1958 and to the last convenient date in 1959, giving separate figures for each type of crime.

Scottish courts have had no power since 1862 to order the corporal punishment of persons 16 and over convicted of crimes of violence. The figures relating to boys under 16 are not readily available.
