HC Deb 10 November 1959 vol 613 c25W
60. Mr. P. Williams

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he is aware of the great number of slum houses in the North-East; and whether he will make a statement about plans for speeding up their clearance.

Mr. H. Brooke

I am keenly aware of the continuing need for slum clearance in north-east England, and in other parts of the country too. Under the Government's slum clearance drive, houses unfit for human habitation are being demolished or closed in England and Wales at the rate of 60,000 a year. This is good progress. My hope is that we shall do even better.
