HC Deb 13 May 1959 vol 605 c136W
21. Mr. Grant-Ferris

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to what extent, in the interests of road safety, he has considered the advisability of replacing the letter L, for a year after the passing of the driving test, by a plate with the letters ND, standing for new driver.

Mr. Nugent

I do not think that my hon. Friend's suggestion would further the interests of road safety. We have no evidence that a driver who has just passed the driving test is more likely to be involved in accidents than a driver with more road experience.
