HC Deb 11 May 1959 vol 605 cc96-7W
65. Colonel Beamish

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster for which countries it is intended that the extra facilities for the teaching of English, described in paragraph 9, Command Papet No. 685, will be made available; and when, and on what scale.

Dr. Hill

Provision has been made in the 1959–60 Estimates for additional expenditure by the British Council, of £84,000 in India, Pakistan and Ceylon. In India and Pakistan, the money will be used to provide further scholarships in the United Kingdom to expand the Commonwealth University Interchange Scheme, to help with local courses for teachers, and to help finance teaching posts at schools, colleges and universities,

In Ceylon, most of the money is to be spent on the establishment of a new British Council centre near the University of Ceylon in Kandy. The timing of the programme will be decided in consultation with the educational authorities in the countries concerned.
