HC Deb 05 May 1959 vol 605 c21W
63. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps are being taken to assist lobster fishing in the Highlands and Islands.

Mr. Maclay

Lobster fishermen are eligible for grants and loans on new boats and engines. There has been a small but steady flow of applications from the Highlands and Islands area for such assistance since the inception of the Schemes in 1953. Fishermen in the North West have been helped to market their catches by the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society which, since 1948, has operated a storage pond at Bernera, Lewis and a refresher tank at Oban with assistance from the Development Fund.
