HC Deb 26 March 1959 vol 602 cc166-7W
Mr. M. Clark Hutchison

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the number, area, and estimated employment potential of Government-financed factories or extensions of existing factories, which have been approved in Scotland since February, 1958.

Mr. J. Rodgers

Fifteen factories or extensions, with a total area of 817,000 sq. ft., and an estimated potential employment of 3,735.

Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the number, area, and estimated employment potential of factories, or extensions of existing factories, for which industrial development certificates have been granted in Scotland since February, 1958.

Mr. J. Rodgers

In the period 1st March, 1958, to 28th February, 1959, location approval has been given for 133 new factories and extensions over 5,000 square feet in Scotland, with an area of 4,237,000 square feet and an estimated employment potential of 5,186.

Mr. Rankin

asked the President of the Board of Trade what administrative machinery exists for making of appeals against rental assessments imposed on Government factories by the Chief Valuer in Scotland; and to what authority such appeals would lie.

Mr. J. Rodgers

Rents of Government factories in Scotland are a matter for arrangement between the landlord and tenant. Technical advice on current market value is given to the landlord by the Chief Valuer in Scotland. There is no statutory machinery for appeals against the Chief Valuer's technical advice, but I understand that it is the practice of the Valuation Office to discuss proposed rentals with tenants.
