§ Lord John HopeThere is no subsidy for new-born calves. In terms of the Calf Subsidies (Scotland) Scheme, 1958, an eligible calf has to be not less than eight months old (six months in hill areas), born in the United Kingdom between certain dates laid down in the Scheme and has to be certified as conforming to the description specified in the Scheme. The present rates are £8 10s. a head for steer calves and £7 10s. for heifer calves. As announced in the Annual Review White Paper (Cmnd. 696) the rate will be increased, subject to approval by Parliament, by 15s. to £9 5s. in respect of steer calves born on or after 1st April, 1959.
