asked the Minister of Labour how many people engaged in shipbuilding and allied trades are unemployed in Sunderland.

At 9th March there were 604 persons last employed in the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industry, registered as unemployed at employment exchanges in Sunderland. The corresponding figure for the marine engineering industry was 84.

asked the Minister of Labour the total of unemployed in Sunderland; what percentage this is of the total working population; and how much of this figure is long-term unemployment.

Four thousand six hundred and seventy-nine at 9th March representing 5.5 per cent. of the total number of employees in the area. Seven hundred and three had been continuously on the registers for 6–12 months and 742 for more than 12 months.
