HC Deb 25 March 1959 vol 602 cc128-9W
84. Mr. T. Fraser

asked the Minister of Labour if he will give Scotland's share of the increase in civil employment in Great Britain between October, 1951, and September, 1957, and Scotland's share of the increase in unemployment in Great Britain from September, 1957, to the latest available date, expressed as a percentage in each case.

Mr. Iain Macleod

A comparison of employment in Great Britain and Scotland can be only in respect of employees for the end of May of each year. Between the end of May, 1951, and the end of May, 1957, the number of employees in employment in Great Britain increased by 1,080,000, of which about 4 per cent. occurred in Scotland. Between June, 1957, and March, 1959, the numbers registered as wholly unemployed in Great Britain increased by 254,000, of which about 20 per cent. was in Scotland.

Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour if he will name those areas and employment exchanges in Scotland where the unemployment rate is still above 5 per cent., 8 per cent., 10 per cent., 15 per cent., 20 per cent., and 30 per cent., respectively.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I am having the necessary information extracted and will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
