HC Deb 25 March 1959 vol 602 cc144-5W
Mr. Mason

asked the Prime Minister what progress has been made towards specialised research into the uses of radioactive by-products of atomic fission.

The Prime Minister

The Wantage Radiation Laboratories of the Atomic Energy Authority have a special group for research into the uses of fission products. Possible new applications in industrial chemistry, agriculture, food processing, insect control, and bacteriological sterilisation are being investigated in collaboration with the industries concerned. The results so far achieved are promising.

Several concentrated radiocaesium sources extracted from waste fission products are already being used by hospitals for radiation therapy; and radioactive materials, including fission products, are already widely used in medicine, industry and agriculture.
