HC Deb 19 March 1959 vol 602 c58W
64. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many Europeans and Africans, respectively, were killed in Nyasaland as a result of public disturbances during the six months immediately prior to the declaration of the present state of emergency; and, for the period since the declaration of that emergency, how many Europeans and Africans, respectively, were killed there.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Answer to the first part of the Question is four Africans, all within the 10 days preceding the declaration of the state of emergency. On the second part, the latest information available to me is that 50 Africans have been killed. There have been no fatal European casualties.
