§ 63. Mr. H. Hyndasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation why the United Kingdom has not acceded to the Convention on Road Traffic concluded under the auspices of the Economic Commission for Europe or at least to its protocol on Road Signs and Signals.
§ Mr. NugentThe conditions which have led to the development of the type of road signs in use on the Continent are in many respects not exactly comparable with conditions here. We are not at present satisfied that the considerable expense which would be involved in an immediate change-over to continental practice would be justified. However, in particular cases, for example, the experimental signs for the Preston Bypass and the double white line road markings, we are following European practice very closely, and we propose to keep the whole matter under review.
