asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a statement upon progress of National Savings during the first 48 weeks of the current tax year 1958–59 compared with the first 48 weeks of the previous tax year 1957–58; and what increase per centum and in money, in net new National Savings' investment, has occurred this year compared with last.

Mr. Amory

The net increase in National Savings during the first 48 weeks of the present financial year, has been £280 million, or about 4½ per cent. In the same period of last year the increase was about £8 million, or about 0.1 per cent.
