HC Deb 04 March 1959 vol 601 c43W
66. Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether, in view of the continuing opposition of Ayr County Council and other interested parties to the diversion of the main Glasgow road as part of the proposed development of Prestwick Airport, he will reconsider his decision not to build a tunnel under the main runway.

Mr. Hay

No. Much as we would welcome the co-operation of the Ayr County Council, we are satisfied that the present proposals are in the best interests both of the airport and Scotland generally. The building of a tunnel at this stage would in any case be likely to delay the completion of the runway for the big jets.
