HC Deb 04 March 1959 vol 601 cc40-1W
36. Mr. P. Morris

asked the Postmaster-General how many applications for telephone facilities are still outstanding in England, Scotland and Wales; and what measures are contemplated to overtake arrears and thus afford suitable avenues of employment for adults and school leavers.

Mr. K. Thompson

At 31st December last there were 57,506 applications outstanding in England, 4,703 in Scotland and 4,232 in Wales. This excludes applications under enquiry or in course of being met.

A White Paper on capital expenditure and the Post Office programme of work in 1959–60 will be published later this month.

We hope to install about 350,000 new telephones in 1959–60.
