HC Deb 21 July 1959 vol 609 c106W
94. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to provide a deep-water quay in Malta, and to introduce mechanisation in the handling of general cargo in the port of Valetta.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Harbour Development Scheme, on which work is now in progress, provides for 1,850 feet of quays to berth ships with draughts up to 30 feet. It will also include a grain silo with a capacity of 11,500 tons and 95,000 sq. ft. of new warehouses. Provision is further made for increased mechanisation of port operations, and it is expected that an experienced port manager will be appointed to organise the mechanised methods of working.
