§ Mr. NugentResearch into the effectiveness of safety belts is being carried out by the Road Research Laboratory with the assistance of the police and the Medical Research Council. It is too early yet for definite conclusions to have been reached.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is also considering safety features in motor vehicle design, including safety belts, and the British Standards Institution is setting up a committee to investigate the usefulness of a British Standard for such apparatus. Until the results of all this research are known it would be premature to start a public campaign.
