HC Deb 10 February 1959 vol 599 c186W
Mr. Ashton

asked the Minister of Education whether he has now completed his arrangements for the establishment of a National College of Agricultural Engineering.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Yes. I am glad to inform the House that, after consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and with the representative bodies of the agricultural engineering industry, I have decided to establish a new National College to be devoted to agricultural engineering. It is proposed to build new premises designed for this purpose at Silsoe, Bedfordshire, near to the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering. I have been assured of the co-operation of the Bedfordshire County Council, for which I am grateful. I am happy to say that Sir Eric Ashby, Vice-Chancellor of Queen's College, Belfast, has accepted my invitation to become the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of the new College.
