HC Deb 10 February 1959 vol 599 c185W
89. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Education if he is aware that certain local authorities are charging an initial entrance fee when a ratepayer joins the local library; and whether he will introduce legislation to amend the Public Libraries Act, 1892, so as to clarify the law in this matter.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

I am aware that some authorities make such a charge. The need for legislation will be considered in the context of the Report of the Roberts Committee on Public Libraries in England and Wales, which I hope to present to Parliament this month.
