§ 116. Mr. Oliverasked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the recent pronouncement by his Department that only in certain circumstances would further Industrial Development certificates be granted in Derby and Nottingham and that such a decision adversely affects the employment prospects of persons seeking employment from the adjacent towns of Ilkeston, Heanor and Ripley, he will now consider bringing the latter three towns within the provisions of the Distribution of Industry (Industrial Finance) Act, 1958, having regard to the existing state of unemployment in this area and the immediate prospect of a large number of mineworkers becoming redundant, the facts of which are known to his Department.
§ Sir D. EcclesThe criterion for adding to the list of places which qualify for financial assistance under the Distribution of Industry (Industrial Finance) Act is high and persistent unemployment. I am glad to say that the rates of unemployment in the Ilkeston, Heanor and Alfreton (including Ripley) areas do not place them in this category. I understand that there is no prospect in the near future of a large number of local mineworkers becoming redundant.
