HC Deb 04 February 1959 vol 599 cc56-7W
57. Mr. Peyton

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, in view of increasing anxiety during recent months amongst highway authorities concerned, if he will reconsider his decision to cut the amounts to be spent on major road improvements in the south west.

Mr. Watkinson

Although I shall not be able to authorise as many major improvement schemes for the south west in the next few years as I would like, I can assure my hon. Friend that I have made no cuts in the provisional programme for that part of the country.

85. Mr. du Cann

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he has yet received from the six south-western counties their schemes for major road improvements; what reply he has made; and if he will make a statement regarding the number and value of the grants for these works for 1959–60.

Mr. Watkinson

The highway authorities in the south-west know what major improvement schemes I hope to be able to consider in 1959–60, but I can make no statement at present about the number and value of the grants that each authority will receive.
