§ 102. Mr. Grimondasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what requests for assistance he has received from Jordan and Israel, through the United Nations Relief and Welfare Organisation, as a result of the drought in the Jordan Valley and adjacent territories; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. R. AllanNo request for help has been received from either country, either16W directly or through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Reports received show that adequate rainfall during the next few weeks is vital if even a moderate harvest is to be ensured. In Israel, the position has to some extent been alleviated by the existing irrigation works. In Jordan, however, the drought has already caused heavy losses of crops and livestock; and has led to a high level of unemployment. Her Majesty's Government have therefore decided, subject to Parliamentary approval, to make an immediate contribution of £50,000 towards the relief of the distress which already exists in Jordan. This sum, for which provision is being sought by Supplementary Estimate, will be disbursed through one of the charitable organisations already active in the area.
