HC Deb 02 February 1959 vol 599 c4W
40. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what steps he is taking to bring within unemployment insurance the out-worker weavers in the Harris tweed industry, now classed as self-employed, in view of their complete dependence for employment and income upon firms supplying yarn for weaving to a delivery time limit and specification imposed by those firms.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

While I have looked sympathetically into this matter, I have come to the conclusion that my predecessors were right in their view that these weavers are self-employed people for the purposes of the National Insurance Acts.
