HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c261W
Sir W. Robson Brown

asked the Minister of Power the latest position in regard to the development of underground gasification of poor quality coal seams.

Mr. Wood

This is a matter for the National Coal Board. It tells me that its experiments have had some success but it does not think further development is justified in the light of commercial prospects as they appear at present. The Board reported its decision to terminate these experiments in paragraphs 120 and 121 of its Report for 1958; if my hon. Friend would like further information I suggest that he writes to the Chairman of the Board.
