HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 cc260-1W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Power what increase in the demand for anthracite coal is anticipated as the Clean Air Act is progressively implemented over the next five years.

Mr. Wood

Anthracite is only one of several smokeless fuels suitable for closed appliances, the total annual demand for which is expected to increase over the next five years by about half a million tons. It is not possible to estimate separately the demand for anthracite.

Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Power how far the output of anthracite coal in 1958 fell short of the demand in the inland and export markets, respectively; and whether it is contemplated that this demand can be met next year.

Mr. Wood

In both the inland and export markets the demand for most qualities of anthracite exceeded the supply in 1958, but it is not possible to say by how much. Supplies to the inland market should be increased next year, though not to the extent necessary to meet fully the demand for the top qualities.
