HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c224W
Mr. Eden

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he has taken to encourage the planting of trees this season, particularly in hedge-rows and small spinneys.

Mr. John Hare

The Forestry Commission has given wide publicity to the need for more tree planting in the countryside. For example, it has exhibited at the major agricultural shows and has stimulated interest among children by making gifts of surplus trees for planting in school grounds. The Commission makes grants for the planting of small woods, and farmers who establish shelter-belts may be eligible for grants from my Ministry. The Commission expects about 5,000 acres of small woods to be planted this season.
