HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c245W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in view of the fact that a considerable amount of the civil engineering labour, plant and capacity in Scotland is not at present being fully employed, he will now speed up authorisations for road schemes of Highlands local councils and increase the amount of financial aid available for road, causeway and marine works in the Western Isles.

Mr. Maclay

The Government's proposals for increasing the amount of road and marine works in the Highlands were announced last June in the White Paper "A Review of Highland Policy". These proposals are now being implemented and, for example, will include the reconstruction of the Tarbert-Rodel road in Harris. The first section of this scheme is nearly prepared and will be authorised within the next few months.
