HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 cc241-2W
Dr. A. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, in view of the announcement by the Fife County Council Planning Committee that 14 per cent. of the land in the Lochgelly district is derelict, and that there is a danger to the lives of the citizens in the waterlogged land adjacent to built-up area, if he will take steps to remedy this situation.

Mr. Maclay

I understand that a survey carried out in 1957–58 for the County Council as local planning authority recorded this percentage of derelict land in the area, some of it flooded. I know of no evidence of danger to health, nor of danger to life beyond that inherent in naturally occurring stretches of water. The problem of clearance or reclamation, where practicable, is one for local initiative in the first place, but any help I can give will gladly be put at the County Council's disposal.
