HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c223W
102. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware that two consignments of food from Commonwealth countries, which were found to be unfit for human consumption but were not so marked, details of which have been sent to him, were discovered at two separate ports recently in two different ships; and if he will make representations to the two exporting countries concerned with regard to the need for examining such consignments at the port of dispatch, in order to avoid danger to human beings and the misuse of ships' tonnage.

Mr. John Hare

I am aware that two consignments of canned meat, both of which were exported from the same country, were examined by the Port Health Authorities at Bristol and Liverpool and were found to be of inferior quality but not unfit for human consumption. None is being sold for this purpose in this country. I am taking the matter up with the country concerned.
