§ 97. Mr. Darlingasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he will take appropriate action under Section 67 of the Gas Act, 1948, to stop the deleterious outpouring of clouds of sulphur fumes and the nuisance caused by coke dust and grit from the Neepsend, Sheffield, gasworks of the East Midlands Gas Board.
§ Sir K. JosephIn 1958, gas and coke manufacture was brought under the Alkali Act, which requires the use of the best practicable means to minimise the emission of smoke, grit, dust and fumes. Since then, the Alkali Inspectorate have been considering with the Gas Board what improvements can be effected at these works. Among other measures steps will be taken shortly to reduce dust from coke stocks and bunkering operations. Section 67 of the Gas Act is not relevant in this connection.
