HC Deb 15 December 1959 vol 615 c139W
94. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs if he will give an estimate of the number of council houses likely to be completed by 31st December this year, compared with last year and with 1954; and if he will give the reason for the expected decline.

Mr. H. Brooke

For England and Wales, the numbers in 1954 and 1958 were 199,642 and 113,146, respectively. My estimate for 1959 is about 100,000. the principal reason for the decline in completions this year being the restrictions on starts imposed towards the end of 1957 as part of the Government's successful effort to counter inflation. The number of starts in 1959 are showing a substantial increase over the previous year.
