HC Deb 14 December 1959 vol 615 c101W
79. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour what factors caused the increase of 803 in the number of unemployed in Sunderland in November.

Mr. Heath

Nearly half of the increase was due to continuing shortage of orders in shipbuilding; there was a seasonal increase in unemployment amongst constructional workers and an appreciable number of men and women not normally in the employment field registered for temporary Christmas employment.

80. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour the number of unemployed in Sunderland at the latest available date; and the corresponding figures for 1957 and 1958.

Mr. Heath

There were 5,749 at 16th November, 1959, compared with 2,319 at 11th November, 1957. and 4,272 at 17th November, 1958.
