HC Deb 10 December 1959 vol 615 cc66-7W
93. Mr. Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that on 27th November last Mr. Kenneth Court, held in custody at Brixton prison, was granted bail, and that on 30th November two sureties were offered who were not accepted by the Metropolitan Police authorities until 3rd December; what was the cause of this delay by the police; and whether he will take steps to obviate the unnecessary detention of accused persons who have been granted bail.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The acceptance of sureties in cases of this kind is a matter not for the police but for the justice who takes the recognizance. From the information which I have received, it appears that the delay in admitting Mr. Court to bail in the period mentioned was caused not by the police but by the failure of the necessary sureties to attend the court to enter into recognizances. The last part of the Question does not arise.
