100. Mr. Milanasked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations if he will consider discussing with the universities and representative bodies in industry and commerce the establishment of a register of young British graduates willing to work in under-developed countries, so that more graduates may be encouraged to take up such work and, also, of a register of graduates returned from such work, so that their re-entry into employment in this country at an appropriate status might be facilitated.
§ Mr. R. ThompsonThe general objective of encouraging young people from this country to serve for a few years in the Overseas Commonwealth is one to which my noble Friend, as he indicated in another place on 8th December, attaches the highest importance. He is at present considering how best the objective can be achieved. I doubt, however, whether, on the particular point the hon. Member has raised, a general register of the kind suggested would be an effective method of approaching this problem, which is best handled by individual treatment.
