HC Deb 09 December 1959 vol 615 cc46-7W
81. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made in recent months in widening the carriageways of London streets by narrowing unnecessarily wide pavements; and if he will speed up the process so as to ease the flow of traffic.

Mr. Marples

Three major road improvement schemes in London have recently included measures of this kind. I have invited the authorities concerned to prepare this year and next year other schemes which include similar features. Minor improvement schemes are a matter for the highway authorities themselves, but I shall continue to encourage them to pay attention to this point.
