HC Deb 30 April 1959 vol 604 c151W
17. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Education to what extent there is a shortage of physics masters in grammar schools, particularly in the administrative county of Essex; what are the prospects of overcoming this shortage during the next five years; and what action he has taken to secure the retention of physics masters in grammar schools who may still be liable to National Service.

Sir E. Boyle

Last October there were 26 vacancies for physics graduates in boys' grammar schools in England and Wales, but none of these was in Essex. I think it highly likely that the shortage in these schools will be overcome quite soon. The deferment arrangements have recently been extended, so that all physics graduates who complete their degree course in 1959 are eligible for deferment for teaching.
