HC Deb 15 April 1959 vol 603 c78W
58. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will now reconsider the cost of travel imposed on Craftsman Hancock who _raveled from Cyprus to attend his father's funeral; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. H. Fraser

Members of the forces serving overseas are not entitled to travel at public expense to attend a funeral unless in special circumstances their presence is essential. Craftsman Hancock was aware of this. He was granted privilege leave and it was found possible to provide him free with a seat on an aircraft to the United Kingdom. A free seat for the return journey was not available and he booked and paid for his return flight before he left Cyprus.
