HC Deb 15 April 1959 vol 603 c80W
66. Captain Pilkington

asked the Secretary of State for Air what are the regulations governing the noise made by aeroplanes going through the sound barrier in that it may cause a nuisance to private citizens.

Mr. Ward

Unless specially _uthorized by the Air Ministry, R.A.F. pilots are permitted to fly supersonically in the United Kingdom only when their aircraft are under radar control, are at least three miles out to sea and are pointing away from land. Aircraft of the Royal Navy and the U.S.A.F. in the United Kingdom follow similar procedures.
