HC Deb 26 November 1958 vol 596 cc49-50W
76. Sir A. Braithwaite

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the equipment for an automatic telephone exchange at Ewhurst, Surrey, has been waiting for installation for a considerable time and cannot be fitted because of the action of the Hambledon Rural District Council; and if he will take steps to see that this expensive equipment is put into operation as early as possible.

Mr. K. Thompson

The original plan was to provide a timber building, as is usual for this size of automatic exchange, but Hambledon Rural District Council, supported by the Surrey County Council, did not regard this as in keeping with the traditional development of the district. We have accepted their view, and we are going to provide a brick building instead. This change of plan has meant some delay, but I expect that the new automatic exchange will be ready in about a year's time.
