HC Deb 02 December 1958 vol 596 c115W
109. Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the term sheriff-substitute carries a derogatory inference unworthy of the status of occupants of that responsible office; and whether he will have the matter reviewed.

Mr. Maclay

This matter has been considered on several occasions, and I am not aware of any circumstances that suggest a need for further review. The status of the sheriff-substitute is well understood in Scotland.
