HC Deb 03 April 1958 vol 585 c193W
Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Health to what extent the outbreak of disease in monkeys at the Beckenham Laboratories has delayed issue of poliomyelitis vaccine.

Mr. Walker-Smith

This has so far delayed the testing process and the issue of vaccine from one manufacturer by about six weeks.

Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Health what are the tests for potency made on the poliomyelitis vaccines.

Mr. Walker-Smith

The potency of each batch is tested on twelve Rhesus monkeys whose serum does not contain any inhibitors to poliomyelitis virus. Each monkey receives a course of vaccine and the level of antibodies to each type which develops is determined.
