HC Deb 03 April 1958 vol 585 cc203-4W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give, for the years 1954 to 1957, inclusive, particulars of recruitment into the nursing profession; and what percentage resigned before completion of training.

Mr. Maclay

The General Nursing Council in Scotland do not maintain an index of student nurses which would give precise information of the numbers entering training and failing to complete training. The number of student nurses and pupil assistant nurses in posts in Scottish nurse-training schools at September in each of the years from 1954 to 1957 was as follows:

1954 7,877
1955 7,634
1956 7,670
1957 7,823

These figures include student nurses at all stages in their training which normally lasts three years.

The number of nurses registered and enrolled after examination by the General Nursing Council for Scotland for the years 1954 to 1957 was as follows:

1954 1,886
1955 1,764
1956 1,887
1957 1,863
