HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 c158W
Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War the cost of educating a student at Welbeck College and the average contribution required from the parents of students; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Soames

The latest figures available are those for the financial year 1956–57 when the cost was about £590 for each boy, allowing for an average contribution of £60 from parents.

Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War what academic qualifications are required by entrants to Welbeck College; and how long is the ordinary course undertaken there.

Mr. Soames

Candidates must be up to the ordinary level of the General Certificate of Education in mathematics and physics and in one or more other subjects. English and a foreign language are desirable. The length of the course is two years.

Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of students at Welbeck College; and what proposals he has for increasing this number.

Mr. Soames

The College is at present full with 150 students. I have no proposals for expansion at present.
