HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 cc154-5W
83. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Labour what factors have caused the increase of 287 in the number of unemployed in Sunderland.

Mr. Iain Macleod

About half the increase was in the shipbuilding and repair industries and the building industry where workers were temporarily stopped by weather conditions. The increase in those wholly unemployed was mainly in ship-repairing, which has been affected by the laying-up of vessels.
