HC Deb 26 November 1957 vol 578 c97W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he is aware that the cost of living rose again last month, and that the reason for this was due in part to increased rents; and what action he proposes to take to maintain and restore rent control, reduce rents and thus assist the Government in their declared policy of reducing the cost of living.

Mr. H. Brooke

The rise due to rents to which the hon. Member refers was less than a third of a point. I pointed out in reply to the hon. Member on 1st August that artificially depressed rents contribute to inflation.
